Ragnar Klavan Bio/Profile

Ragnar Klavan joins the Reds as captain of his country Estonia and with more than 100 international caps to his name.

The left-sided defender has spent the last four years at Augsburg and played in both legs when Liverpool beat the Bundesliga side in last season’s last-32 Europa League tie.

Klavan, 30, immediately established himself as a key member of Augsburg’s backline following his transfer from AZ Alkmaar, making at least 30 Bundesliga appearances per season in his four campaigns at the WWK Arena.

A commanding presence who is comfortable playing either centrally or at left-back, Klavan is hugely experienced, having made his senior league debut for first club Elva in his homeland at the tender age of 16 in March 2002.

A move to Tallinn-based club Flora followed, where Klavan won the Estonian league title in 2003, before Eredivisie outfit Heracles came calling two years later.

Klavan - who is set to become only the second Estonian to play in the Premier League after former goalkeeper Mart Poom - moved on to AZ in January 2009, and he helped a side managed by Louis van Gaal claim only the second Eredivisie title in the club’s history later that year.

Following three-and-a-half years with AZ, Klavan made his switch to Augsburg in July 2012.

Now, he follows Joel Matip, Marko Grujic, Loris Karius and Sadio Mane in joining the Reds ahead of Klopp’s first full season in charge.
